Every weekday MTM loss control representatives work to improve the safety of our member’s shops. Sometimes that work involves safety recommendations, sometimes safety presentations, and sometimes research for a member on a new system, rule, or procedure.

At the annual MTM member’s meeting last October, we had a presentation on “Active Shooter” in the workplace. Given the headlines this topic has garnered recently, it was no surprise that the October, 2018 annual meeting had its largest member attendance in company history.

While MTM spends all this time helping our members, we decided to devote a half a day to a safety training for the MTM staff. We thought MTM staff should be trained on the same topics we make available to our members. The training included:

  • CPR—while most of us have had this training some time in the past, it was a good refresher course.
  • Defibrillator usage—this was very interesting in that few of us have had this exposure or training before. We had a good training session on this topic with practice dummies and equipment we all had to use.
  • Tourniquet evaluation and usage—this was also a fascinating discussion from a physician assistant in practice. Only one person in the office had this exposure, and it was outstanding to have this practice and learn from the physician assistant on when and how this should be undertaken.
  • Active shooter—as a follow up to the presentation at the last MTM annual meeting, but focused on the MTM office layout and options. This session included practice drills in our office. Where would we go? How would we manage it?

It is always difficult to find the time for training sessions, but somehow we and even MTM staff must find the time to make training happen. At the end of the MTM training all staff learned and practiced important safety procedures. We also now have firsthand knowledge of how important theses training sessions are. Included are some pictures taken during the training session.

Please call us anytime that we can help on these and any other loss control activities that will improve the safety of your shop. That has and will remain the focus of the MTM Loss Control staff.

With spring finally arriving, we hope you get some time to enjoy it.
